Saving on Carla comes from four things: its promo codes, the under-25 fee waiver, Carla Plus and choosing the right rate. This guide covers each one, with every detail taken from Carla's own site.

Where to enter a Carla promo code
Carla works differently from most sites: you apply the code before you search.
- Select "Enter Promo Code" at the top of rentcarla.com, or go to rentcarla.com/promo.
- Type your code in the Promo Code box and select Apply.
- Search for cars as usual.
- Check the discount on the checkout page, then pay.
Two rules decide whether a code works: only one code can be applied per reservation, and it has to be applied before payment, because codes cannot be added afterwards. If a code is refused, the usual causes are an expired code or a typo.
Under 25? Skip the young driver fee
Rental companies usually charge drivers under 25 a daily young driver fee of $30 to $40 at the counter, and it is not included in the price you see online. Carla waives it on cars marked "Underage fee waived", which Carla says saves $40 a day. To see those cars, enter your correct age before you search, then pick a car with the banner.
In most US states the minimum rental age is 21; in New York and Michigan it is 18. Drivers aged 18 to 24 may otherwise pay the fee at the counter.
Carla Plus and Carla Cash
Carla Plus is Carla's membership, joined on the checkout page when you book (Carla says it is currently offered in the Carla app). Members get:
- $19 in Carla Cash every month, starting after your first pickup as a member and continuing while you stay subscribed.
- Free cancellation with 100% money back if you cancel at least 3 hours before pickup.
- Priority access to customer support.
There is no free trial, but the fee comes back as Carla Cash, and you can cancel any time; perks run to the end of the billing month. Carla Cash is used on the checkout page in the app, only for the pay-now part of a rental and not for hotel bookings.
Flexible or promo rate?
- Flexible rates refund 100% of your prepayment if you cancel at least 48 hours before pickup. Later cancellations are non-refundable.
- Promo rates with standard cancellation often cost less, but the prepayment is not refundable.
- Trip Cancellation Coverage refunds you in full, minus the coverage fee, if you cancel 6 hours before pickup.
What you pay online and at the counter
Carla shows taxes, airport surcharges and mandatory fees upfront, and you can prepay in part or in full with Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover. A few costs are handled at the counter instead:
- Security deposit: usually about $250 to $350 for standard cars, held on your card and returned after drop-off.
- Young driver fee: unless your car has the fee waived.
- Cross-border fee: if you take the car out of the country it was rented in.
- Optional extras you choose at the desk.
What to bring to the counter
- Your voucher or eVoucher.
- The main driver's credit or debit card, in their name, with funds for the deposit. US rental companies do not take prepaid cards, and no rental company takes cash.
- Each driver's full, valid licence, held for at least 12 months (often 24). Licences not in Latin characters need an international driving licence.
- Your passport or other ID. Picking up with a debit card? The office may also ask for a utility bill or a return ticket.
Protection plans
Carla's protection plan covers damage to the rental car, for any vehicle size, regardless of fault and for all drivers on the agreement, and Carla says it costs less than cover sold at the counter. It does not cover scratches, off-road driving or animal strikes, and claims must be made within 10 days. You can add it before pickup in the Reservations tab.
Small choices that save money
- An off-airport pickup with a shuttle can be much cheaper than an on-airport desk.
- Not driving much? A like-for-like fuel policy can save you money.
- Choose a car with plenty of room for your passengers and luggage.

Is Carla a car rental company?
No. Carla is a software service that compares and books cars from rental companies; your rental agreement is with the company you pick up from.
Can I change a Carla booking?
Yes, in My Reservations, but rental companies may not allow changes within 24 hours of pickup; then it is better to cancel and rebook.
Do I get the exact car model?
No. Bookings are for a car class, not a specific make or model.
