Search for an Amazon promo code and you will find pages of codes that never seem to work. That is not bad luck: Amazon promo codes come with strict rules, and most of the savings on Amazon are not codes at all. This guide explains where Amazon promo codes go at checkout, why a code gets refused, how clippable coupons differ, and the savings that work without any code, with every rule taken from Amazon's own help pages and terms.
For the Amazon offers we list right now, see our Amazon coupons and promo codes page.

- ✓Check "sold by Amazon.com" before using a code
Amazon promo codes vs coupons: what is the difference?
Amazon uses three kinds of discount, and each one works differently:
- Promo codes are typed in at checkout, in the Gift Cards and Promotional Codes section. Amazon says they can only be redeemed at the time you place an order.
- Coupons are clipped on the product page. There is nothing to type: Amazon's coupon terms say a coupon applies only to qualifying items that show the coupon offer on the product page and in your Coupon Book.
- Promotions already on your account. Amazon notes that some promotions, including certificates issued by Customer Service, are placed on your account automatically and appear on the Order Summary page before you complete the order.
Where to enter an Amazon promo code
The code box is on the payment step of checkout, not in your cart. Here is how Amazon says to use it:
- Check the promotion's terms, and follow any instructions that came with the deal.
- Add an eligible item to your cart and proceed to checkout from the cart. Amazon says you can't use 1-Click when redeeming a promotional claim code.
- Find "Enter a gift card, voucher or promotional code". On the Select a payment method page it sits under "Your available balance", above your cards. It can also be entered on the Place Your Order page.
- Type the code exactly as given, with no spaces before, inside or after it, and select Apply.
- Check the price on the final checkout page before you place the order. If you don't order then, Amazon keeps the promotion on your account until it is used or expires.
If the order costs more than the promotion is worth, Amazon asks you for another payment method for the balance.
Amazon promo code not working? The real reasons
Amazon publishes standard terms that apply to its promotions unless a promotion states other terms. They explain almost every refused code:
- The item is not sold by Amazon.com. The offer only covers products sold by Amazon.com or Amazon Digital Services LLC. Items from third-party sellers don't qualify, even if they are "fulfilled by Amazon.com" or "Prime Eligible". Look for "sold by Amazon.com" on the product page. eBooks are the exception.
- The item does not qualify. Each code applies only to qualifying items, and digital game and software downloads are excluded.
- You are below the minimum purchase. Taxes, shipping and handling, and gift wrap charges don't count towards a minimum.
- Your order is split. For physical goods, the code only covers items bought in a single order and shipped at the same speed to a single address.
- You already used it, or another offer is applied. Offers are limited to one per customer and account, and may not be combined with other offers.
- It has expired or run out. Promotions are for a limited time, while supplies last, and Amazon can modify or cancel them at any time.
- It was typed with a space, or you used 1-Click.
Two more rules worth knowing: promo codes can't be used on gift cards, sales tax, gift wrap or extra shipping costs, and a promotional certificate is single-use. If an order is cancelled it comes back to your account, but if you return the order for a refund, it can't be used again.
Find clippable Amazon coupons
Clip on the product page, nothing to type
- ✓Applies to the qualifying items that show the coupon
- ✓One coupon per customer
How Amazon coupons work
Coupons follow their own terms, separate from promo codes:
- Clip, then buy while it is live. Coupons are valid for a limited time, and the discount only applies if you buy the qualifying items while the coupon is in effect.
- Only the items shown. A coupon applies only to qualifying items that display it on the product page and in your Coupon Book.
- One per customer. Amazon limits each promotion to one coupon per customer, and it may not combine with mail-in rebates.
- Returns. If you return an item bought with a coupon, the coupon discount may be taken off your refund.

Lightning Deals: 15 minutes to check out
Lightning Deals are short, limited-quantity discounts listed on Today's Deals. Each is one per customer, and once you add one to your cart you have 15 minutes to buy it at the deal price. After that, your cart shows the everyday price. When every deal is claimed you can join a waitlist. Two rules trip people up: check out with "Proceed to Checkout", because 1-Click stops the deal from applying, and use the same account to claim and buy it. During Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, Lightning Deals are exclusive to Prime members.
Amazon Resale and Amazon Renewed: cheaper than new, with returns
- Amazon Resale (formerly Warehouse Deals) sells customer returns, open-box and warehouse-damaged items, graded Like New, Very Good, Good or Acceptable. Lower grades get deeper discounts. Orders come with Amazon fulfilment, Prime shipping and free returns, and you can return an item within 30 days if it doesn't match its described condition. Items listed as "Used - Acceptable (Final Sale)" can't be returned.
- Amazon Renewed items are backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. Most come with a 90-day return period, Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items with 365 days, and select items with a 30-day return period followed by a free 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion.
Amazon Prime: is the free trial worth it?
Prime starts with a free 30-day trial. As of October 2026, it then costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year, with Prime for Young Adults at $7.49 a month and Prime Access at $6.99 a month for eligible customers, and you can cancel anytime. For deal hunters, Prime matters most during Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, when Lightning Deals are exclusive to Prime members.
